Maintaining a balance between our work lives and personal lives is critical to our health and happiness, yet often overlooked.

  • Create rituals for relaxation; they become habits.
  • Connect with nature daily, even if only in some small way.
  • Schedule connections with friends and family just as you’d schedule a work-related meeting.
  • Include a bit of work, life and play in each day.
  • Close your eyes for one minute and just listen.
  • Read a novel.
  • Seek laughter-LOL daily!


Work-Life Balance

It’s not surprising that work-life balance is one of the most important aspects of job satisfaction. We often don’t acknowledge the impact that workplace stress has on our mental and physical health. The variety of challenges and unpredictable situations that we may face on a daily basis are innocently incorporated into our bodies as physiologic responses we may or may not be aware of, such as changes in muscle tension, blood pressure and psychological manifestations. These biological changes, if sustained for prolonged periods, may adversely affect our well-being.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) definition of job stress is defined as:
"…a harmful physical and emotional response that occurs when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources or needs of the worker.”

NIOSH also reports the median number of days away from work was 25 for anxiety, stress, and neurotic disorders—substantially greater than the median of 6 days for all nonfatal injury and illness cases.

Today’s workers struggle to manage the demands of work and home at increasingly difficult levels. Therefore, it stands to reason that the largest distribution by age of time loss was among workers in the 35-44 year old range who are likely to be trying to balance the needs of their families with the demands of their jobs. Management of workplace stressors, both psychological and physical is critical to job satisfaction, employee retention, productivity and profitability. Creating a workplace that addresses stress management provides employees the tools needed to manage and cope with any type of stress, whether it originates in the workplace or not.
