Nurture Yourself

Wellness requires self-care. Eat healthy foods, incorporate physical activity in your daily routine and get enough sleep. Set aside time each day for a calming activity that you enjoy, such as yoga, meditation or reading. Discover activities you can do with others. Enjoying other people's company and maintaining a sense of connectedness to others is an important part of stress management.

Managing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) brings on fear of the unknown on many levels; particularly, because there is no “managing “of WRMSD, it manages you. We often realize too late that by ignoring our symptoms and pain signals, we’ve ended up with an injury that may be beyond our ability to recover. We can’t undo the harm we’ve done, and to go on doing the same thing we’ve been doing will only cause more harm, potentially rendering us permanently disabled.

The reality is that you cannot expect to recover from your injury if you don’t remove yourself from the circumstances aggravating your symptoms long enough to allow healing. And going back to the same environment that caused your injury without making changes will not result in a different outcome. The path to wellness must be different than the one that led you to where you are now.

The time has come to put yourself first. Courage is the strength to let go of the familiar. Change always involves transition. Ask yourself the following:

Work-related injuries don’t have to become career ending, but ignoring our symptoms and accepting our circumstances as “un-fixable” renders us incapable of influencing the outcome. Seeking the help of others to assist you in your efforts towards wholeness can be challenging when you’re worn down physically and emotionally from living in chronic pain and uncertainty. However, taking loving care of oneself has great rewards.
